Description
An account of the resource
For most of human history, our eyes served as the recording device for our observations of the night sky. Later, developments in photography began to change how we viewed and documented astronomical observations. The instrument collection consists of auxiliary instruments used on the 12-inch equatorial refractor. Some of the instruments such as the filar micrometer and spectroscope were designed for use with human eye as the detector, others such as the plate camera used film.

Description
An account of the resource
Wood, brass, glass
Wooden box (dimensions) with hinged lid, with 4 colored shades (2 green, 2 red), 3 eyepieces with adapter, one smaller eyepiece with adapter, accessories for light.
“Its filar position micrometer consists essentially of a position circle 6.3 inches in diameter, graduated on silver to half degrees and read by to verniers to tenths of a degree and a very accurately threaded screw, carrying a light frame holding the micrometer wires. Whole revolutions of the screw are read by a toothed wheel and fractional parts of the screw are given by a drum of 2.5 inches diameter whose circumference is graduated to hundredths. Tenths of divisions are readily estimated. The micrometer box is moveable in position angle, the entire system of threads fixed and movable is carried ‘in distance’ by a screw without graduations and the eye piece is adjusted to the center of the fields by a still different screw.”
A filar micrometer is used for precision positional astronomy by measuring the separation or angular distance between two objects. In addition it can measure the position angle between them. They were often used to measure the angles and distances between double stars. Data gathered over long periods of time could demonstrate the orbit of one star about the other star. Micrometers are seldom used on modern astronomy having been replaced by newer techniques.
This micrometer came with the Equatorial. Stebbins used it to measure size of crater Linné during February 8, 1906 lunar eclipse. Cleaned by J.W. Fecker in 1954.

Wood, metal
Wooden frame with moveable seat and eight steps on four castors. Measures 45” x 48” x 103” tall. Moving adjustable chair with foot-rest connected to counter weights slides up and down in the middle of the stairs with in a wooden track. Seat held in place by friction. A small table that attaches to the chair is missing. Two drawers added later under the steps. Follows the design of Professor George Hough of Dearborn Observatory as published in the March 1881 Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, volume 41 pages 309-312.
Bevis and Company built the ladder for $25 based on design provided by Warner & Swasey.

Description
An account of the resource
In addition to equipment attached to the telescope, astronomers, especially in the "new astronomy," often had laboratory equipment that could be found in a physics laboratory. Much of this equipment at Illinois was related to the development of photoelectric photometry. The photometer turned the star's light into electric current and much of this equipment was need to measure the electrical output of the photometer.

photometry
Description
An account of the resource
The photocell is hand blown glass or quartz. Within in the cell is an alkali metal (lithium, sodium, or potassium) that covers the inside and is a cathode emitting electrons when illuminated. A well insulated wire forming a ring centered in the bulb acts as an anode for collecting the emitted electrons. The inside of the bulb is filled with an inert gas such as helium, neon or argon.
The cell with number 15 (Wisconsin inventory number) bear Stebbins’ number 54. It is a typical glass tube in almost original condition.
The second cell is number 23 in Wisconsin’s inventory and bears Stebbins’ number QK 37-4 indicating it is a quartz tube with potassium hydride as the photo-cathode material. It was produced in 1937. This tube comes in an original cardboard box labeled with QK-37-1 and QK37-4. The box is also historically significant.

Lantern slide of the 30-inch reflecting telescope after it was rebuilt between 1925-1927. The dual-channel photoelectric photometer hangs on the end of the telescope. The rebuilt telescope was located in a 15-foot domed Observatory located on Florida Avenue south of Mount Hope Cemetery. The telescope was rebuilt by the local firm of J.B. Hayes for $1560 starting in January 1925. Baker announced its completion at the American Physical Society's annual meeting on December 29, 1927. This lantern slide is part of the Observatory's collection and is marked "PE 9."

Lantern slide of the photoelectric photometer around 1925. From the Observatory's lantern slide collection, marked "PE 2." Robert Baker continued Stebbin's photometry work when he arrived at Illinois in 1923. He continued to use the 12-inch refractor for photometer until about 1926 after which time he used the rebuilt 30-inch reflector.
